Drömstart

Installation | entry for OPEN CALL VDW X IKEA: DARE TO DREAM | 2024

The Kallax from Ikea is an everyday item known to everyone. Many of us grew up with this shelf and associate it with a multitude of memories. Our favorite items are stored in it. When we see a Kallax, do we unconsciously fill it with the items in our household, office, or clubhouse? The drömstart installation works not only with the enormous physical potential and versatility of this design object but also with its function as an emotional anchor. Our memory serves as storage for the memories this anchor evokes. The installation explores the transition from wakefulness to dreaming. Dreams are often a reflection of our daily lives. They contain fragments of experiences, encounters, and emotions that we have experienced while awake. This installation uses familiar spaces to create a connection between the real world and the dream world. In our dreams, we process what we have not reflected upon during the day. What finds its way into our dreams? What is reflected there, and what new things emerge? „drömstart“ invites visitors to explore the relationship between everyday life and dreams. A control system will be built to operate the installation. The process is simple. Visitors sit on the MALM. There they find a pulse sensor, which they hold to their finger. The sensor reads the person’s pulse and begins to control the installation in this rhythm. Simple relays are used for this purpose. These generate a soft clicking sound that also becomes an acoustic part of the experience. The installation offers an immersive experience that invites us into the deeper layers of our consciousness. Do we find ourselves there?
